Marc Miller Replaces Sean Fraser as Immigration Minister

Marc Miller has been announced as Canada’s new Immigration Minister. Miller was given the role today during a cabinet shuffle by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

Canada’s most recent Immigration Minister, Sean Fraser, is now going to become the Minister of Housing, Infrastructure and Communities. Sean Fraser has served as Immigration Minister since taking it over from Marco Mendicino in October of 2021.

Miller recently served as Minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations, a role meant to support the self-determination of Canada’s Indigenous peoples.

Miller was first elected to Canada’s Parliament in 2015. Prior to entering politics, Miller was a practicing lawyer and also served in the Canadian Armed Forces. Miller was born and raised in Montreal. He earned two degrees from the Université de Montréal in Political Science and his law degree from McGill University.

Over the next three years, Canada will increase the number of new immigrants to the country each year.

Canada will aim to welcome 465,000 new immigrants in 2023. The target will rise to 485,000 new immigrants in 2024. And it will again rise in 2025 to 500,000 new immigrants. The plan also brings an increased focus on attracting newcomers to different regions of the country, including small towns and rural communities as well as attracting Francophones throughout the country.
